Oulu South Hydrogen Valley
Oulu South Hydrogen Valley offers top-tier conditions for implementing hydrogen and Power-to-X (P2X) projects!
- The area’s competitive edges are strong electrical grid connections and substantial available grid capacity, with 5,000 MW ready for hydrogen and P2X projects.
- Finland’s most significant (20 TWh) renewable energy hub is being developed in the region between 2025 and 2032, offering onshore wind and solar power at Europe’s most competitive prices.
- The region already has pre-zoned areas for hydrogen production and P2X projects, ranging from 20 to 180 hectares, owned by municipalities and cities. These sites are strategically located near electrical substations. Additionally, Gasgrid’s national hydrogen network and local hydrogen distribution network are currently in the planning phase.
- Other important issues related to hydrogen production and P2X-projects are in good condition. The region offers excellent rail connections to ports, biogenic CO₂ sources (from biogas plants, bio-refineries, and district heating production), and the opportunity to distribute waste heat through the district heating network.
- The region has a plentiful water supply, with no constraints on availability or wastewater management for project development. The water distribution and wastewater infrastructure are in excellent condition, even for large-scale production.
Benefits for Owners and Project Developers
- Services provided by local businesses enhance social acceptance and cost-efficiency of investment projects. Regional development organization NIHAK helps connect investors with local business partners.
- The region’s qualified labor pool, and active collaboration with educational institutions and strong industrial partnerships create a significant competitive edge. The atmosphere is welcoming for new developments and investors. NIHAK provides complimentary local support for project development.
