Xylo Gas Oy

Bioenergy

Our story started in the early 2000s with the development of a wood-gas-powered car by company founder Fredrik Ek, current CEO. Over two decades, we have delivered wood gasification systems, as well as burners and flares for various gases to customers in Finland.

Our vision is a resource efficient and carbon negative bioenergy sector – fully utilizing sustainable forestry residues and waste wood with minimal emissions and biodiversity impact. In our view, the key is to produce as much value as possible from a given resource.

Xylo Gas today
With background in thermal gasification, we recently extended our portfolio into biochar production. We have combined a pyrolysis concept with indirect gasification in a novel way. Consequently, we invented our current key product, a clean and compact state-of-the-art thermal gasification/ biochar process technology. The technology is now in the phase of a working prototype built in spring 2024. Biochar can be used as agricultural soil additive and carbon storage or even be used in metallurgy. The syngas can be used as raw material for Methane or Methanol production, for replacing fossil fuels in industries or as fuel in CHP’s.

Xylo Gas Oy specializes in developing and delivering bioenergy cleantech solutions, focusing on wood gasification technology. Founded by CEO Fredrik Ek, the company has been active since the early 2000s. They are currently constructing a prototype plant based on fluidized bed and pyrolysis screw principles, aiming for a fuel capacity of 1 MW. This facility will produce clean syngas, biochar, and heat from wood chips and recycled wood, with adjustable outputs. The syngas can be utilized for combined heat and power (CHP) production or transported via pipelines for remote use.
