Energy Storage II: From Assets to Analytics: Optimizing Storage Across the Lifecycle

Making storage investable to scale renewables in the Nordics

Energy storage is a key enabler for scaling renewables in the Nordics, but the main challenge is no longer technology, it is building investable business cases in immature and fast-changing markets. This talk examines how storage revenues are evolving beyond frequency services, what kinds of revenue stacks can credibly support long-term investment today, and how grid constraints and market design influence project sizing and operation. It will also highlight which changes in market rules, regulation and financing frameworks would most effectively unlock the next wave of battery deployment across the region.

The “Hidden” Storage Market: How Behind-the-Meter Batteries Create Value for Tenants, Owners, and the Grid

The hidden storage market is behind the meter, where battery energy storage (often paired with solar PV) can create simultaneous value for tenants, property owners, and the grid when deployed as a standardized portfolio rather than one-off projects. Drawing on real deployment lessons from Dessco sites in Finland, I will explain how this value stack works in practice, including what drives the benefits and what needs to be in place to deliver it reliably.

Seeing What Others Miss: The advantage of Independent Data Analytics of BESS

The presentation outlines an independent, condition monitoring approach for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that goes well-beyond OEM and operator dashboards to protect asset value and reduce risk for owners and operators. By integrating data from the BMS and SCADA system it delivers a holistic view of battery health, system performance, and balance-of-plant behavior, translating raw data into actionable abnormality reports and owner-relevant KPIs. Through independent baselines and cross-fleet benchmarking, the approach prevents underperformance, quantifies the trade-off between operational stress, enables early fault detection and optimized maintenance planning, and provides claim-ready evidence for warranty and insurance cases—ultimately supporting professional, data-driven BESS asset management over the full lifecycle.
